Hybrid Solar Systems

The future of electricity generation in Australia lies in producing your own solar energy during the day and storing it in a battery bank for use at night. This can significantly reduce, or even eliminate, the need to draw electricity from the grid. At QSS, the future is already here. Our dedicated engineers design reliable battery backup and hybrid solar systems that can generate clean, low cost electricity for many years to come. A hybrid system allows your solar panels, solar inverter, battery system, and the utility grid to work together.

Hybrid solar is an attractive and affordable option for both households and businesses looking to reduce their electricity bills and move towards greater energy independence. Hybrid systems can include backup functionality, allowing them to continue operating when the grid is down. However, some systems will not function during a grid outage. While having backup power during an outage is a valuable benefit, it is an additional feature and may increase the overall system cost by approximately 30%.

Your battery bank can also help reduce household and business electricity bills by supplying power during peak periods, when electricity is most expensive to purchase from the grid. This process is known as peak shaving.

Off-Grid Solar Systems

Also known as stand alone solar systems, off-grid solar systems provide electricity comparable to grid power. They are installed in locations where grid electricity is unavailable or unreliable. Off-grid solar systems consist of roof or ground mounted solar panels, an inverter, batteries for energy storage, a charge controller that manages the different power inputs, and an integrated backup generator, either diesel or petrol, if required.

Compared with older off-grid systems, modern off-grid technology is easy to maintain, fully automated, and can be monitored and controlled online. Another benefit of modern off-grid systems is the quality of the electricity they produce. This power quality is often better than average grid electricity and may help extend the lifespan of your appliances and machinery.

As off-grid solar systems can be customised according to the client’s needs, their size can vary significantly. They can be designed to power a single appliance or an entire township. A backup generator can also be integrated into the off-grid solar system to provide additional power during periods of bad weather or increased energy demand.

Off-grid solar systems – autonomy

From a professional design perspective, an off-grid system should provide at least 1.5–2 days of autonomy in the battery bank if a backup generator is available. Without a generator, the recommended autonomy period should be increased to 2–3 days.

Autonomy refers to the number of days the battery bank can support your normal daily energy usage. This means that during periods of low or no sunlight caused by bad weather, you will still have enough stored power to operate your appliances as usual without requiring the generator to start.

To calculate the required battery bank size, multiply your daily energy usage in kWh by the number of autonomy days you require. For example, if you use 10 kWh per day and would like two days of autonomy, you would need a battery bank with 20 kWh of usable storage.

I cannot recommend this company. After completely missing our scheduled solar installation date (failed to book us in despite taking a 50% deposit) and delaying my project a further month and a half, I was forced to cancel and request a refund. The communication following their mistake was slack and incompetent. I had to constantly chase their team up just to get updates on my money. I have finally received my funds back, but the entire process was an exhausting waste of time.
